Underage Drinking Task Forces: Middletown & Meriden/Wallingford

In 2006, Rushford received two grants from the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services to organize Underage Drinking Task Forces in the Middletown and Meriden/Wallingford communities. These task forces will be led by Sheryl Sprague, Rushford Prevention Manager, who previously served as the prevention coordinator for the Town of Glastonbury. Sprague is working with community leaders in both areas to build effective collaborations that address the causal factors of underage drinking and to develop environmental strategies aimed at educating parents, caregivers and youth on the risks and consequences of underage drinking.

Mother & Daughter Evenings Out

Rushford provides monthly Mother-Daughter Evenings Out in Glastonbury, Meriden and Wallingford. The program is designed to help mothers and their middle school daughters develop positive bonds and enhance communication during the critical time of adolescence. The free program includes dinner and activities and is held at the Riverfront Community Center in Glastonbury and at various sites in Meriden and Wallingford. Mother-Daughter Evenings Out is sponsored in Glastonbury by the Ensworth Foundation and by the United Way in Meriden and Wallingford.  For more information, call 203-630-5357.

Family Nurturing Program

The Family Nurturing Program is a 16-week educational and support program for parents and their children (ages 3 to 11) held in collaboration with the Middletown Board of Education’s Family Resource Center at Farmhill School. The parent portion includes an opportunity to share experiences and effective parenting skills. The children’s portion provides a safe and trusting environment where children can express feelings and engage in activities that promote family unity, self-esteem and other life skills. The program is held in collaboration with the Children's Trust Fund.  For more information, call (203) 630-5357.

Skilled prevention staff provide interactive educational and motivational presentations on topics such as building resiliency, conflict resolution, self-esteem and awareness, and other prevention issues. Prevention Training

Prevention staff present workshops that focus on innovative approaches to prevention. Schools, community agencies, businesses and professional groups participate in this training. Kickin’ It on the Green

Rushford's annual "Kickin' It On the Green" event will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2008 from 11a.m.-3p.m. at Union Park in Middletown.  More than 400 area residents attended the 2007 event!

This year's activities include spin art, sand art, make your own jewelry and temporary tatoos.  Our line up also includes performances from a local karate studio, clown and magician.  Both the State Police and the Middletown Fire Department will provide demonstrations on driving and fire safety.  A giant 22-foot slide will be available for children to enjoy themselves on for hours of play. The newest addition to this event is the enormous 24 foot rock climbing wall, sure to provide extreme fun for everyone.  Four people can climb at once - come down to see if you can make it to the top!

The 2008 celebration is aimed at providing healthy drug and alcohol free activities for local families, with this year's focus on combating underage drinking.  Local organizations will provide information on services available in the community.  Whatever you partake in, it's sure to be a fun time for all For more information, please contact Nikki Stephenson at 860-852-1091.
